If you push the other balls with one of the two outer balls, the centre balls remain at rest while the outer balls oscillate. This is a playful demonstration of the conservation of momentum. Experiment with the children by either throwing only one ball from the outside or throwing two at the same time. Let the balls start at slightly different times and observe what happens. Where does the energy of the impulse go when you hold a thin, soft cardboard between the balls?
