Hand boiler, green (also called love barometer)

Inside the hand boiler is a liquid that has a very low boiling point. If this is heated, for example by holding the lower part of the hand boiler with your hand, it starts to ‘boil’ and produces vapour. The vapour in turn pushes the liquid upwards, which begins to bubble.

The body heat causes the air in the hand boiler to expand. As the air expands, the liquid is pushed up into the pipe. Once the liquid has moved towards the top bubble, the air expands further and ‘blows’ through the liquid, creating a boiling effect.

The hand-held boiler is also known as a ‘hand bubbler’ or ‘love thermometer’. Essentially, the hand-held boiler is a thermodynamic physical ‘toy’ with great effects. It's no wonder that the hand-warming kettle used to be called a ‘temperament gauge or love thermometer’.
After all, what a bundle of energy it must be for someone to make a liquid bubble with their bare hand.
